Nigel Mansell’s epic UK Youth Cycle Challenge ride around the UK has been visiting many towns and cities to meet young people and see the kind of work Bike Club is supporting.
I went up to Blackpool to see what Damian had set up as a welcome for Nigel and his peloton. I arrived in Stanley Park to find Damian and his friends at Cycle Blackpool getting ready in the rain, but as they assembled bikes and laid out obstacles, the clouds cleared and the sun started shining.
Children and young people started arriving and joining in with the activities Damian had planned. There was skills training, an obstacle course and the chance to ‘bling your bike’ by decorating it. A range of accessible bikes were available too, so disabled young people were included, and able to enjoy laps of Stanley Park’s 400m track.
As word came through that Nigel Mansell and the peloton were nearing Blackpool, everyone lined up at the entrance to the park. Behind their motorcycle outrider, Nigel rode in beside the Mayor of Blackpool, followed by his sons Leo and Greg, ex-pro Magnus Backstedt and many other supporters. 45th Blackpool Scouts, supported by Bike Club, had ridden with Nigel for the last part of the Blackpool stage.
There was a flurry of autograph signing, a bottle of celebratory champagne and then Nigel was interviewed live on air by BBC Radio Lancashire. With hudreds of miles in his legs looking exhausted, it was impressive how he was so professional
Nigel was introduced to some of Blackpool’s Bike Club-supported projects – the Windmill Youth group, the Boathouse Project and the 45th Blackpool Scouts, all of whom have received funding from Bike Club to extend opportunities for young people.
