Next month sees Darlington take part in celebrating International Women’s Day, 8th March. Darlovelo are organising an afternoon of fun activities hailing women and their bikes at Dr Coffee’s Cafe. From Dr Bike maintenance sessions, to a guided ride, all are welcome to join in the event.
International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women from the past, the present and the future. Darlovelo will celebrate the important role that the bicycle has had in promoting the freedom and liberty of women, around the world and in our very own Darlington.
Talking about the bicycle, Susan B. Anthony an American civil rights leader said in 1896, ‘[The bike] has done more to emancipate women than any one thing in the world.’ Darlovelo are running a day of events at Dr Coffee’s Coffee shop, there will be an opportunity to make suggestions for how to encourage more women to take to their bikes, meet Darlovelo and see their hire bikes, talk to Breezeride about women only group cycling, find out about the organisations, events and facilities that Darlington offers with the hope to improve access to cycling.
“Historically women cycling broke down barriers, it meant that women were not confined to skirts, their geographical horizons were widened and they were able to challenge gender roles. Yet, in 2012 in Britain, less women are cycling than men, we hope the on International Women’s day we will provide women with another opportunity to celebrate the emancipation that cycling brought, and most of all to celebrate the freedom!” Annie Ravazzolo, Promotions Officer.
The event takes place on Thursday 8th March 2012, between 2pm – 6pm at Dr Coffee’s.-97 Parkgate Darlington DL1 1RZ. For more information contact Annie Ravazzolo at cool@darlovelo.org or call 07519741734
