Exciting new partnership MTB Bike Club launched in Brighton & Hove 18/10/2011

An exciting new project aimed at getting young people from Brighton & Hove on their bikes was launched last Wednesday. With support from Bike Club seven local organisations have come together to buy a fleet of mountain bikes. Each organisation has had staff trained in mountain bike leadership, which means they can run their own bike rides with young people for years to come. The first rides took place over the summer and were a great success. The fantastic thing about this project is that it’s really sustainable because the organisations involved are running things themselves, and it’s very flexible and adaptable, with each organisation running different types of rides and activities to suit the particular needs and interests of the young people they’re working with.
It’s also exciting because it’s brought together the University of Sussex and it’s Students’ Union to work in partnership with organisations supporting disadvantaged young people in Brighton & Hove. This means that the young people are getting regular exposure and access to a higher education institution and meeting students, and is also creating an exciting volunteering opportunity for students.
The partnership MTB Bike Club was officially launched at an event on Wednesday 12th October, at which Dr Michael Farthing, Vice
Chancellor of the University of Sussex, joined a young person in cutting a ribbon to open cycling activities, and
participants were presented with certificates by Councillor Sue Shanks, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, and Councilor Geoffery Bowden, Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism.
The partnership MTB Bike Club aims to give young people new opportunities to access the countryside, engage in a higher education institution and of course have fun with friends, whilst encouraging them to cycle in their every day lives. As well as offering mountain biking, several of the organisations involved are running bike maintenance sessions and Bikeability cycle training, giving young people the skills and confidence to cycle on the road. Young people have also developed a wider range of skills by getting involved in fundraising and evaluation. Young people from Tarnerland Children and Yong People’s project raised £1,500 by submitting a Youth Capital Funding bid, and young people from the 67 Centre interviewed their peers about their experiences in Bike Club and turned their findings into a fantastic banner.
After a long run up of all seven organisations working hard to get going, it’s fantastic to see the project getting off the ground andyoung people enjoying getting riding. Bike Club projects such as this widen young people’s horizons by developing new skills, encouraging young people to take leadership roles and, of course, engaging young people in a mode of transport which directly gives them independence and freedom. This project is a great example of how many benefits cycling can have. By encouraging cycling as a means of sustainable transport, organisations are engaging young people in physical activity, providing exciting adventures and building skills and confidence. It really goes to show how much cycling has to offer to young people and their communities.
The organisations involved in running the project are Tarnerland Children and Young People’s Project, 67 Centre, Deans Youth Project, Brighton & Hove Fostering Service / Intensive Placement Team, Active for Life, the University of Sussex and the University of Sussex Students’ Union. Each organisation works with different young people, many of whom are disadvantaged, living in deprived areas or are looked after children.
As well as receiving over £15,000 in total from Bike Club, the seven organisations have received support from Brighton & Hove’s Transport Planning team, Tarner and Easter Road Health Action Group and Youth Capital Fund.

Can’t wait for Saturday! Preston Park will once again be filled with fantastic sports activities to try out for free as part of the Take Part Festival. I’m particularly excited about Bike Alley, one of the exciting Bike Week events happening this week. There’ll be bikes of all shapes and sizes to have a go on, including 2 wheelers, 3 wheelers, recumbents, tandems… There’ll be cycles available for use by people of a variety of abilities, so it really will be a chance for everyone to take part and have some fun.
Bike Club will be leading the all-ability cycling activities using lent by Downs View School, who’ve been running a successful Bike Club for over a year with bikes bought with funding from Brighton & Hove Cycle Town. M-cycles will be there too with a range of bikes of different sizes.
It’s all free, so come down to the park between 12 and 5 on Saturday and have a go!
Bike Train chugs through Brighton 21/06/2011

On a rainy Sunday a couple of weeks ago I joined the Springwatch Bike Train. Bike Train has been running in Brighton & Hove for the past year from town up to Sussex and Brighton universities. With support from volunteers, groups of students meet to ride up Lewes Road together. The safety in numbers approach means that riders who might not fancy the busy main road can have a fun ride with a big group, a sound system and support from experienced cyclists. The Bike Train’s been a big success and on 5th June it branched out to run a series of Bike Trains throughout the day to and from the Springwatch Festival. I arrived in the pouring rain and wasn’t very optimistic about having many riders to cycle with, but was thrilled when a whole bunch of people turned up, including some young children with their parents. We braved the weather, and the sound system kept us going on what was a fun and friendly family ride which I thoroughly enjoyed! This week Bike Train has organised Bike Week rides two and from Patcham High and Dorothy Stringer schools, and had a fantastic turn out yesterday with over 20 riders pedalling to school together. After many months of organising, a group of organisations in Brighton are almost ready to launch their exciting city wide mountain bike project.
The partnership project will involve youth groups and organisations from across the city running their own regular mountain bike rides with a brand new fleet of bikes which will be owned and maintained collectively by the groups themselves.
Back in January 2010 I met with Tarnerland Children and Young People’s project to discuss their ideas for a Bike Club. They were keen to run mountain bike rides, and the young people worked hard on a successful application for Youth Opportunities funding to buy some bikes – hooray! The problem was they had nowhere to store them! Undeterred, Tarnerland worked to build a fantastic partnership with organisations across the city to establish bike storage and make sure the bikes could be used by lots of different young people.
They partnered with the University of Sussex who have provided land, right on the South Downs, for bike storage to be located. The two organisations then joined with other youth organisations working with disadvantaged young people to make a partnership application to Bike Club to fund the storage and other elements of the project including some additional bikes. Each group also made seperate Bike Club applications to gain funding to have their staff trained in mountain bike leadership and bike maintenance. Brighton & Hove Cycling Town provided additional funding to buy tools and parts to help maintain the bikes.
All this hard work has resulted in the beginnings of a fantastic project, bringing together organisations from across the city to share resources and work together to manage a sustainable, fun mountain biking project! Sussex Students’ Union and Sussex University will provide volunteers to support trained youth leaders in delivering sessions for a wide range of young people facing challenging circumstances. The project will give young people the opporunity to access the fantastic South Downs National Park by bike, and to make friends and learn leadership skills.
The bikes have now been purchased, and the first staff were trained over Easter. More staff will be trained in the coming months, and groups have begun booking the bikes for rides in the summer!

On Saturday thousands of people came to the Take Part Festival in Preston Park in Brighton for a fun-filled day of free sports and activities. Bike Alley, organised by Journey On, was very popular. Bike Club supported the event by bringing along a fleet of all-ability cycles borrowed from Downs View School for people to have a go on.
Over the course of the day, 300 people had fun trying out the wide range of different trikes and bikes we had on offer. The great thing about having a range of cycles to ride is that people with different riding abilities can take part. There were cycles suitable for children and adults, including people with disabilities. They included a trike, a two seater “Side by Side” cycle, some fantastic recumbent cycles and some go-cart style Fun Racers. It was a great chance for families to have fun together.

The activity was a big success, and many people queued up several times to ride the bikes again and again. The success was partly due to fantastic support from cycle trainers from Bike for Life as well as hard-working young volunteers from Dorothy Stringer High School. Bike for Life also brought along some family friendly bikes which proved very popular, including a tag-along for an adult and child to ride together, and a bike trailer for children.
The cycles have been funded by Brighton & Hove Cycling Town, with money from Cycling England, and are being thoroughly enjoyed by pupils at Downs View School.
Bike Alley kicked off Bike Week in Brighton & Hove. There are plenty more chances to get involved in cycling this week – check out Journey On for more information.

Bike Club has only one rule: there are no rules! Yes, in Bike Club you can do what you like because almost any cycle-related activity can form a Bike Club.
The national scheme, led by CTC, UK Youth and ContinYou, helps groups of children and young people to benefit from learning opportunities through cycling and is officially launching in Woking with a networking event on Thursday 11 March 2010.
Woking now has its own dedicated Bike Club Development Officer to help you set up your own club. If you would like to hold maintenance sessions, go on organised bike rides or set up an off-road biking club, then Bike Club can make it possible and can even offer financial help, with grants of up to £2,000 available.
Rose Rickford, Woking’s Bike Club Development Officer, is hosting the Bike Club launch and networking event at Woking Leisure Centre, Woking Park, Woking, from 10am to 11.30am.

Hi! Since landing in the South East I’ve been finding my around and working out what’s what. I’ve been cycling around and learning about how to fix my bike – which is a bit of a slow process! I’m planning trips to explore the BMX and off-road facilities in Brighton, Hove and Woking, and am looking forward to visiting some youth groups and extended schools. If you’re in Brighton, Hove or Woking and think Bike Club might be for you get in touch, it’d be great to hear from you!
